Cracked Heels Cracked heels are a very
common foot problem, caused by dry skin (xerosis), and made more complicated
if the skin around the rim of the heel is thick (callus). For some people
this is a nuisance and a cosmetic problem but when the cracks are deep,
they become painful to stand on and the skin can bleed. Some people just tend to
have a naturally dry skin that can crack. Thickened dry skin (callus)
around the heel that is more likely to crack is often due to mechanical
factors that increase pressures in that area. - regular maintenance may
be the best way to prevent the problem. For more information, see ePodiatry's cracked heels information and the article on cracked heels at the Foot Health Forum.
